Hair Loss; its causes and remedies (Elliot Hutchinson)

Most commonly appeared hair loss that becomes causes of great concern is Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) or Androgenic alopecia. More than 95% of men facing baldness fall under this category. It has been generally observed that before attaining the age of thirty-five, over two third start experiencing loss of hair and before reaching fifty, about 85% of them experience extreme baldness that speak upon their personality. It is also significant to note that one fourth of the victim of MPB start experiencing thinning of hair prior to reaching the threshold of their youth, i.e. before twenty one.
Those who fall victim to MPD suffer from psychological and social negativities. Baldness has great impact on their personality and thus creates a sense of inferiority complexity. It may even deprive them of the pleasure of their romantic life. The worst part of MPB is that, it may even speak upon one's professional life.

Besides MPD, a number of reasons may be attributable to loss of excessive hair. One of the reasons may be any sustained ailment or major surgery, causing hair loss three to four months later. You may find such hair loss as transitory only. Hormonal discrepancy may be another reason for loss of hair. Hyper-active or under-active thyroid glands may lead to hormonal complications and the resultant hair loss. Male hormone is known as androgen and the female hormone as estrogen. Any imbalance in these hormones causes excessive hair loss. This can be remedied by treatment of the thyroid.

It is also observed that during pregnancy, high secretion of certain hormones in women permits the body to keep the hair intact. But, 3 months after delivery of baby, hormonal imbalance will once again arise and may cause loss of hair. There are certain medicines that may also cause hair loss and can be remedied after stopping to take that particular medicine. Anti-coagulants that are administered for thinning down the blood, in case of hypertension or cardiac problems, is one such medicine that may cause hair loss. Besides, excessive intake of vitamin A, birth control pills and anti-depressant may also cause loss of hair. Most cases of hair loss in men are hereditary.

Dihydrotesterone (DHT) is a kind of androgen helps in regulating growth of hair and sexual urge. Those with MPB have higher level of DHT. Hair follicles are sensitive to DHT. With higher DHT, these follicles get shortened and their life span gets adversely affected and so not produces hair that could be accepted cosmetically.
Hair loss is marked by the recession of the hairline and a thinned crown. Hair follicles in these areas are extremely sensitive to DHT. Therefore, with more secretion of DHT, these areas along with temples and mid-anterior of the scalp are subjected to baldness. With the hair vanishing from the scalp, only a very thin rim in the shape of a horse shoe remains as MPB.

Hair loss can be remedied by Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) in which a miniature strip of donor hair is taken out from a donor area and is relocated on the bald area that diminishes the MPB to a great extent.
