Often taken for granted by the younger generation, hair loss is an extremely embarrassing problem that many men and women of varying age groups face. A problem, which often is hard to detect in its early phases is often a cause of several factors or a combination of them.

In a day, it is quite normal for you to shed 50-100 strands, but it is definitely not alright if you begin to shed larger amounts. Usually this problem is often a result of many causes such as hereditary problems, stress, illnesses, side effects of medications, major surgeries, air pollutants, childbirth or any other related health reason.

Hormonal Changes: Many hormonal changes and imbalances may lead to loss of hairs. Various imbalances such as polycystic ovary, onset of menopause or various other balances. There are certain sex hormones which may trigger a particular pattern of permanent hair loss. Discontinuation of birth control pills, childbirth and pregnancy may also lead to temporary hair loss. Certain other hormonal problems include falling female hormones such as oestrogen and progesterone. This may lead that testosterone will have more impact, affecting the hairs follicles which may cause mild to severe thinning of hairs.Medical Conditions: You may be suffering from certain medical condition which may trigger hair loss. Some of these conditions may include thyroid problems, scalp infections, alopecia areata or any type of skin disease. The thyroid gland is one of the most important glands that help to regulate hormone levels in the body. Any imbalance caused to the thyroid may lead to hair loss.Medications: Various people suffer from various chronic illnesses and take medications, very often on a long-term basis. These medications may have certain side-effects causing hair loss. Some of these include medications taken to treat illnesses such as depression, heart problems, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc.Physical / Emotional Shock: Various events, physical or emotional shock that occur in our lives may leave us in a state of an emotional frenzy. These high levels of emotion may lead to thinning of hairs. For example, death/s within the family, excessive weight loss, high fever, etc.Hair-pulling disorder: Also known as trichotillomania, hair-pulling disorder is more of a mental illness which causes people to impulsively pull out the hairs from the body. The hair may be from any part of the body or all: scalp, eyebrows, etc. This type of hair fall on the scalp may leave behind patchy bald spots on the head.Certain hair styles: When the hair is tied tightly in a particular manner it may lead to pulling of the hairs from the scalp, which in turn leads to hair loss. Some of the hairstyles include tight ponytails or pigtails, cornrows, dreadlocks or even weaves.

It is very important to get the right diagnosis so as to treat hair loss. If you have an underactive thyroid, anemia, iron deficiency or any other medical condition it is important to understand whether the medications for this illness are triggering hair loss or the disease is partially contributing to it.

An extremely embarrassing problem to have, hair loss may be caused to a number of factors. Some of the most common causes of hair loss include hormonal changes, medical conditions, side-effects of medications, physical/emotional shock, hair-pulling disorder or hair pulling disorder.
